The plot involves the pets banding together to stop an evil rabbit named Snowball (Kevin Hart) from taking revenge on human owners in the name of abandoned animals. That's at least the second animated feature in ten years to feature an evil rabbit, along with the painfully underrated Hoodwinked (and Hoodwinked 2 wasn't half-bad either). The original animated feature is directed by Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney and written by Brian Lynch, Cinco Paul, and Ken Daurio. It stars Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Steve Coogan, Ellie Kemper, Bobby Moynihan, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Jenny Slate, and Albert Brooks. I might have to sneak into a theater playing Kung Fu Panda 3 and do a "watch the trailers" thing before my afternoon Jane Got A Gun matinee tomorrow just to see how all of these play to audiences in a theater, but I digress. These range from the perceptive to the juvenile with a midway butt-sniffing circle reinforcing the sense that The Secret Life of Pets is content as a fun, throwaway 90 minutes even if it initially posed something a little more substantial. While I'm not predicting Minions-level success 6.5 months from now, I have a tough time seeing how a movie like this doesn't play to pretty much every movie-going family on Earth. Anyway, this morning sees the second trailer, one of many animated trailers debuting with Kung Fu Panda 3 tonight.

There are frequent sight gags scattered throughout. The script is sparky, without ever really catching fire. The large scale of the sweeping Manhattan skylines at sunset stand up equally well next to the sumptuously rendered close-ups of generously seasoned chicken, set upon by Chloe the cat. The characters are expressive and the animation intermittently dazzling. Particular highlights include a cockney Steve Coogan as the tatty leader of a gang of hairless alley cats – think Peaky Blinders with claws instead of flat caps. CK brings an understated, every-man charm to Max and Lake Bell and Bobby Moynihan provide loveable support in the form of his chicken-chomping, butt-scratching pals. While Hart may grate at times, vocal performances are pretty solid all round. Snowball is a manic freedom-fighting bunny rabbit hell-bent on the destruction of mankind and an antagonist and eventual ally to the two dogs over the course of the film.

Before tensions between them can bubble over into bite as well as bark, the two are freed by Snowball, voiced by the unrelentingly shrill, migraine-inducing Kevin Hart. Synopsis: Taking place in a Manhattan apartment building, Max's life as a favorite pet is turned upside down, when his owner brings home a sloppy mongrel named Duke. Starring: Jenny Slate Albert Brooks Dana Carvey Steve Coogan Kevin Hart Louis C.K. After a walk gone wrong the two are caught by animal services. Director: Chris Renaud,Chris Renaud,Yarrow Cheney. Max’s existence of Upper East Side domestic bliss is turned upside when his owner adopts Duke, an enormous, rowdy rescue dog. This is the case for Max, the pampered pooch heading The Secret Life of Pets’ canine cast, voiced by the comedian de résistance Louis CK.

The summer’s newest slice of glossily animated family fare poses a question as old as time: what do our pets do while we’re gone? Some lounge, some gorge on the contents of our unsuspecting fridge and some, with the sole intention of dutifully awaiting their owners return, embark on sprawling adventures, full of self discovery and furry peril.
